The Derbyshire and Staffordshire Meynell Hunt has a rich history which can be traced back to 1793. It was instigated by the Vernon family who lived in the glorious countryside of Sudbury in Derbyshire. In 1813, when Lord Vernon died, the Hunt changed its name from Sudbury to Hoar Cross Hunt. By the latter part of the 1800s the Hunt was organising its own race meetings, the first of which took place in 1876. That inaugural meeting took place on Uttoxeter Heath on Tuesday 28th March 1876 when the Meynell Hunt Cup saw Mark beat Inex and Black Joe, while the Red Coat Chase was won by Diana at the expense of Innkeeper and Dick Turpin. The meetings were successful and racing continued to be administered by the Meynell Hunt committee for the next 19 years. In the 1890s they were billed as ‘Uttoxeter and Meynell Hunt Steeplechases’ and were staged at Uttoxeter. The final recorded meeting took place on Saturday 6th April 1895 when the opening Grindley Steeplechase was won by Mr H G Harper’s White Heat and the principal race by Rolleston. After this meeting successful point to point meetings were staged at Ednaston, Derby. |
